Will the bat be used or for display?

If to be used, then polyurethane.

For display, many options. Shellac is easy but may yellow over time. Also not good to expose to water.

Lacquer goes on clear and stays clear.

Boiled Linseed Oil takes many coats for gives a nice hard finish.

Tru-Oil used on gun stocks gives a nice hard finished, goes on easily, but will add some colour due to the dyes.

Beeswax or Johnson's paste wax goes on easy, but will dull over time, but easy to re-coat.
