I turned this yesterday from a rotted chunk of firewood.
I used a ton of CA glue to fill and harden powdery and soft areas.
Whew that stuff burned my eyes and throat as I cut through the glue.
Is that normal?...can't say I like doing that too often.

It sounds like the CA glue was melting and off-gassing due to the heat generated by the turning. It may be difficult to eliminate all off-gassing when you had to use a lot of CA glue. Light passes will help.
