I have been asked to build a blanket/cedar chest for a friend of mine by his wife. He will be retiring from the USAF in Dec. and she wants me to build it and attach the rank/stripes on the front and the USAF wings on top. I feel honored to receive the request and being a retired USAF Vet. makes it double honorable.

She has requested cedar, and I have made quite a few of those so that is not a problem, but the rank insignia and wings will be challenge. I do have a nephew-in-law, that has a cnc router set up for his business of making piano and organ keyboards, I am hoping that he can replicate the items I need to attach to the finished piece. I am thinking that I will use cherry for the insets and hopefully it will enhance the look next to the cedar.

Any other suggestions of an alternate wood to use? I have walnut and maple, but their bedroom furniture is dark, so wanting to come close to a match for that but yet I want the insets to standout some.

Personally I think it would look better to mortise and insert the real insignia's. It shouldn't be difficult to get extras so he can keep the originals.
That is not what she wants, she wants it to be proud, so that is not an option.
