Mirror frame question

Simple question, I have a large frameless mirror hanging in a spare washroom. The mirror is mounted directly to the wall with a metal bracket and four clips on the upper and lower edges of the glass.

I built a simple frame that will have a spot for the light fixture on top. Not sure I want to remove the mirror to attach to the frame since that will just add weight. I think I would like to attach the frame to the wall instead.

Any one ever tried this? If so how did you mount the frame? Does this make sense? Anyone have any ideas?

Makes sense not to try to frame it, those things can get heavy. You can just pick up some molding you like and rabbet it to cover the edges of the mirror. Attaching you could use construction adhesive. Loctite makes one that dries absolutely clear:

It is kind of a contact construction adhesive in that you only need to hold it in place for a few seconds and it is good to go on light weight things and masking or painters tape will clamp it until cured. :smile:

If you do decide to incorporate the mirror into a frame, I would suggest half-lap joints for the corners of the frame and the French cleat would be a good way to hang it.

I did one. It had the clips and the Mirror was stuck to the wall with some sort of mastic. I left the clips and cut the back side of the frame to fit over them...

I will try he contact adhesive, think that sounds like my best option. I saw the steel style of French cleats, and had that in mind. But built this on a whim without pondering the fastening system with the need to be flush to allow the light fixture to be mounted to the mirror frame.

Keep in mind that any frame around a mirror has to be tight to the glass, otherwise you get a reflection of the back showing.

I am finishing the frame now, just got my second coat op poly on.

Hop to get it installed this week. Can't wait to get rid of the hideous light fixture as well.
