I always liked Marples tools when they were made by the Record tool co. don't know about them since Irwin took over.

Don't know anything about them. I would not look at them if they aren't High Speed Steel. Most good turning tools today are HSS. They hold an edge much longer than carbon steel and you can't ruin the edge by over heating when sharpening which is easy for new turners to do.

I do not think Marples still makes turning tools.

As John Lucas mentioned, check that these are High Speed Steel.

If HSS and Sheffield made steel, they should be decent tools.

There are a number of companies still making turning tools using Sheffield steel such as Robert Sorby, Henry Taylor, Crown, Ashley Iles.
