I was lucky enough to find a few burls when I was home last, a few maple and a few box elder. I cuts small chunk off the maple burl and put it in the microwave for a bit; turned a nice pen out of it. I'm not really sure what to do with the rest, turn it wet and let it dry or just let it dry naturally?

So quick question...did you cut them burls off a live tree?? Ive got some on a big tree in the yard, but have never cut them. Been wondering if you can chainsaw them off live, or ya have to basically kill the tree doin it? How do you guys take your burls?

I cut mine of living trees and painted over the area that I cut. This was the first time I have harvested burls so I did a bunch of reading online prior to removing them.

The burls look gorgeous, have very pretty grain patterns and colors which made that great looking pen. Great fit and finish as well. Great turning!
