I have some projects that are going to need a paint finish. I'm really inexperienced with paint finishes. I'm thinking of trying an hvlp. But I dont want to start out with a high end system. Just the basics to do for now, while i resaerch and learn all I can prior to purchase a quality machine. Anyone have any experience with the $100 dollar jobs. I REALIZE that this is not the best system. However, has anyone tried any of these starter machines?

I recommend the Astro brand guns.
I've used an Astro "DX" series for over 10 yrs painting cars
and my furniture with lacquer.
It is probably the highest quality "import copy" out there.
They can be had at Spray Gun World for under $100.00
(They're pretty famous on the car paint forums.)
The HVLP needs a lot of air, like all hvlp's.
If you don't have it, get the LVLP,
It uses less air and I hear it sprays even better.

Either way, I found bigger fittings makes a difference for getting the
volume of air they need. The 1/4" air line fittings are not big enough.
I switched to 3/8" ones and it made a big difference.
I got them at Home Depot for about $10.00 as a kit.
