I searched the forum and couldn't find what I was looking for, so if this has been answered before, I apologize.

I have an old Rockwell 46-140. I'd love to be able to swap the current motor with a reversible one. Is this something that's even possible?

The current motor that's on there is a 62-142 (1/2hp).

Some motors can be wired to run in reverse. Normally this would be indicated on the motor or terminal box.

Assuming you find a reversible motor, it should not be difficult to mount with your lathe.

If you want the reverse to be a simple switch, you will need to come up with some design or switch and box unless you are able to find a motor with a reversing switch function.

Before you put the lathe into reverse, and are using a scroll chuck, check that you have your chuck locked with a set screw so it does not come off.

A 2 pole , double throw (2 position) switch will also work.

Obviously your motor must have the wiring capability to reverse it. You will need a 4 conductor rubber covered cable ... SJ prefix.

Buy a small 3phase motor 1/2 or 3/4 hp, run it off a vfd and get reverse and speed adjustment.

Probably be cheaper then finding a single phase motor that can be easily reversed, buying a drum switch and all that jazz.
