Jigsaw blades

I just picked up an old craftsman jigsaw and the blade has a hole in it. Home Depot has blades that fit but they do not have the whole, same with Sears period the u-shaped top but no hole. It fits in the opening just fine. Does the blade need to have a hole in it?

I have an old C raftsman saw also

The holes are for the side screw to "seat" into, but they work OK without them. The notch at the top is what's critical to keep the blade from leaning backwards under excessive feed pressure.
I like the "T" style used in the Bosch saws or the old "L" style used in old Porter Cable jig saws.

Depending on the brand and age of your saw, some jig saws need the hole because the set screw is what holds the blade tight. The saws that need it can't be used well without it.
Most newer saws have eliminated the screw to offer easier, tool-free blade changes. A very nice feature for sure.
