How would you achieve this? Is it woodburning?

Hi guys,

New to the forum. I am working with an old whisky barrel head that I have cleaned up and restored (to some extent). I want to add some branding and have some experience with create stencils by hand but don't want to simply paint on top of the oak. How do you think something like the example below is achieved? Is it burnt in with a large stamp? Hand burnt with something like a soldering irion? Or just an automated laser?

If you wanted to try to get this look with tools/matrerials available to a normie like me, what would you do?

Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome, Barry.
on a production scale, it would be burned in with a laser.
for just a "one off", and the person didn't have access to a laser that large, it could be burned in my hand with the appropriate pyro tools. . . what size is the area you want to put the graphics ??

thanks for your reply John. It would be the size of the barrel head shown there, so maybe 15-20 inch diameter. I'm thinking I sketch it all onto the top with pencil and then use a hot soldering iron to burn over my pencil marks. Should this be done before woodstain?
How accurate and clean are you wanting this to turn out? Laser or CNC, preferably laser, is really the only way to go on this unless you're going for a rustic look.

I'm ok with rustic.

Whichever technique you elect to use, do some test runs on some scrap.... pallet wood? Maybe test a couple of techniques, settle with the best results.

Hold out for Dr. Roberts to post. He's just getting into laser work. If you are wanting to do work that big the equipment may be expensive. My son bought an inexpensive one and does smaller work roughly 12"x12".
maybe 15-20 inch diameter
There are laser machines under $500 that will do that though you may have to tile once to get full coverage.
They do make specific tips to use with irons when wood burning. Here's a quick page from Amazon...

Without owning a laser or CNC, I'd try my hand at burning, using a good wood burner, with assorted tips and temp adjustment. If you're burning, I'd do the logo first and then the stain. The stain will very much highlight the procedure. And as SonnyAgain suggested in Post #6, first do a few tests on scraps of wood. Maybe "weathered" Oak, or a piece of old oak flooring? Why not put your stencil-making experience to work?

I'm not quite sure about staining with CNC or laser usage. I'll leave that reply to the pros in those fields!
There is no easy way to do that even if you have a laser. The vector (art work) for the bird alone is going to be complicated to redraw into vector format alone . Very possibly you can find a vector bird image on hundreds of web sites where you can buy for a few $$ the text work should be no real problem I am sure they are using a standard text type that can be found on line.
Another solution id to get a good quality Redbreast logo image , there ar plently on line and send it to someone to vectorize here is one source to do that. The Vector Doctor.
Once you have that then anyone with a laser can burn that into your barrel head .

That is easy to do with a laser. Take a jpeg and laser it onto the wood. This one might be tough because the colors of the dark and light are close and separating the print from the background wouldn't be easy with the trace function.
To be clear, the photo in your first post is only an example that you pulled off the internet (Etsy)? And your question is basically - "how did they do that" ??
Your flag indicates you are in Ireland? - Look around in your area for Sign Shops, Trophy Shops, etc. Some of those trades use laser engraving now for their artwork.

On a smaller scale, I once had log slices laser-etched. Once for a youth dog-sled race I organized and once for a Christmas spruce pot making party my wife organized. As mentioned, many home lasers are limited in size but a 12" diameter seems like it would work. Seems one could take wood veneer and have it laser-etched to exact specifications and then apply the veneer to the barrel bottom/top. I think you could even etch the veneer so it looked like the image was on wood planks.

Correct, just the look I'd like to achieve in terms of colour etc, design could be anything. This is something I'd like to be able to repeat with different designs as needed, a skill I'm willing to spend time at and learn. But not really interested in just buying an expensive machine to do it for me

Patience will be key... post pictures when you're in process and done so others can see the problem, the tools and the results. <<-- that's what helps the forum help everyone!
