I am staining a dresser with a water based Saman stain but I want to top coat with an oil based wipe on poly.

How long should I wait before starting the top coating process?

Thank you.

Hi I have used that stain and finish before very nice stuff . The stain drys very fast but I would play safe and give it a good 24/48 hours , so the urethane don't pull any stain when applying it

Good advice Ricko. I had not considered that the poly might do this.

I will likely put on a second coat of stain - not sure if I would have to wait that long between coats.

Your label should have general instructions. While the stain may feel dry in an hour or so, I would at least give it overnight. If you rub it with a clean dry cloth, no color should come off.

.
Thanks Cabinetman. The general instructions are not particulalrly helpful. I will use your dry cloth test and wait likely 2 days to be on the safe side as per the other feedback received.
