Help with finsih wood for fish tank!

My first choice would be a pre-catalyzed lacquer. It's not completely waterproof but can easily withstand the occasional spill. A more waterproof finish would be an oil based polyurethane however it may smell like paint for a month.

An oil based film finish is your best bet, but be warned that no finish is 100% water proof. Some water will always find a way in. An oil based poly, like Steve mentioned, is a good way to go, but I think personally I'd use either a polyester or epoxy resin.

Thank you for your replies I am considering some type of Apoxsee resin. I also came across parks super glaze. What do yo u think of that as a clear coat? It's pretty thick. And should be waterproof?!

Looking at it, it seems to be a standard epoxy resin, so I'd imagine its work pretty well. Should also be waterproof, provided its applied properly

Are you building a fsh tank out of wood? Or are you building a fish tank stand out of wood?

I am building the complete fish us k out of wood. I have high capentry skills, I build furniture for clients all the time. This fish tank is actually for a customer. I lack in proper chemical finished.

Sudes the back the top and the bottom are out of wood the front will be glass

Just so you guys are clear on what I am actually building, it is basically a fish tank with cubbies "sections."There will be 6 inch holes going from each cubby so the fish can swim from Section to section and the customer can decorate each cubby a different style and color lighting. Which I will be inserting into the wood. I completely designed everything up using AutoCAD fill Traciann and all, but I'm stuck with how to waterproof the wood so the woodgrain whole show. I hate covering up the beauty of woodgrain.

How about fiberglass resin, without the fiberglass? I made a plywood fish tank once, but used the resin and fibers to seal theinside, then painted it in marine paint.
