register the dado slot to the outside surface _only_.

this means flipping pieces and keeping track of which is the "outside" surface.
don't feel bad - I've boobooed that any number of times....

if you rotate/flip the left pc so the thin side is "down" - it'll be fine - but that only works where the mortise/tenon and/or half lap is also 'perfectly centered'

It would be easier when making parts like that if you put the tennon in the center and then match the groove to it. That way it would be reversible. Since you have run the groove on the opposite edge the rails will need to be replaced.

I was looking at this (not too closely) and couldn't see the problem.
I was thinking it was the small mis-match on the top.
here is a better photo to show the issue at hand.

Yes. I figured that.
I also found a great video from a channel called Woodcraft in Spokane. He taught a thirty minute class on the exact thing I am trying learn..so that was helpful.

Really appreciate you all coming out.. the woodworks..to help! Gotta start somewhere.

Ah yes. And that crack came from when I first thought I had to use my chisel to knock off the protruding tenon...then I realized my problems were much bigger.
