My husband and I enjoy woodworking together. We started designing and making things for our home that we just could find exactly what we wanted. We love challenges and learning experiences. Anyway, I am here now to learn from all you guys!

I am curious - how do you find various woods? We have a small lumber yard about 20 miles away. They have several exotic hardwoods that we have purchased and used, but the quanities are limited and often very expensive. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site Kelly!
Have you tried finding a local sawmill. I get most of my wood from my local mill at a considerably lower price. It is rough and has to be planed and work, but that is half the fun.

Welcome Kelly, yea exotics are expensive. I don't know what you guys are making but there are some awful pretty domestics that can be had reasonably ? Stick around, we are full of it (information ;))

Thanks for the welcome! I spent half the night reading...you guys are awesome.

I appreciate your ideas on finding wood. I am now on a mission to find a local saw mill. We are having a hard time finding any wood - exotic or domestic. So...any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Over the weekend, we found a gentleman who was "reducing" his woodworking operation. We were able to buy some very nice walnut and cherry. I have also found some places online that sell wood, but I would prefer to find somewhere local. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again!

I check the local craigslist every now and then. Maybe not so much will show up in Fla., like up here in the midwest where the stuff grows on trees.

Thanks for the tip! Seems everyone in this area is looking for wood. I am considering posting a "lumber wanted" ad on craigslist...maybe I'll get lucky. I appreciate your help.
