I am looking to produce a martial arts fighting staff. This is a cylindrical pole an inch in diameter and six feet long. There are staffs made of oak and I ordered some oak dowel in the same dimensions however it was much lighter in weight and was bendy where the proper staffs don't bend. Can anyone suggest how these staffs are made stronger, harder, denser?

Wood selection and harvesting procedures. First chose a much harder / denser lumber - Black Locust, Bois d'ark, Persimmon etc.

Use a straight grained portion or split the blank out prior to turning it round. You can harden lumber, in a sense, with a kiln schedule however I am the wrong individual to advise on that.
