While finishing my maple and walnut chess board, will the Walnut colored Famowood filler darken the maple?
Or will it sand off, or should i use natural oak color?

The stain in the walnut famowood could stain the maple. To be on the safe side you might mask off the maple.

It's hard to tell exactly what you are using. If you are surfacing the board you couldn't tape off the Maple. Are you talking about a wood putty filler...like a repair putty or a paste wood filler/grain filler?

I would just use a clear sealer and then topcoat with a film finish.

Gees, I didn't know famowood made a grain filler. You especially would need to keep it off the maple. It basicly is wood stain with a lot of solids. On a chess board I believe I would fill the grain with a clear grain filler such as Crystalac or just use a lot of sealer. If you got the color on the maple it would take so much sanding to get the stain out you would have to grain fill the walnut again.
