I have seen several shop made jigs for sharpening gouges. Any suggestions on a good one to make?

Suck it up and buy the Oneway Wolverine system and Vari-grind (#1 or #2) You won't regret it.

Me too. I did build a wooden copy of the Ellsworth bowl gouge grinding jig (I used this in place of the Oneway wolverine) then made a wooden version of the Oneway system for sharpening with the V arm. It worked, but when I finally bought the Oneway system with the wolverine jig it works so much better I don't regret the expense at all.

x6 (or whatever # we're on). And make sure you take your time and set it up right. I was about to sell my new setup until I was shown how to properly use it. Now you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands, along with my guns. :)
