Friction polish?

I mixed according to a noted woodturner, Captain Eddie Castelin, with one third each of denatured alcohol, boiled linseed oil and Zinsser clear shellac. OK, so far, so good. However, I applied it to a small hollowing that was light about like maple. Sorry but have no idea of the species. When I applied the FP, it turned darker than walnut. I went back and reviewed his video to make sure I was doing things right. He stated what to use, no shortcuts. Any ideas of what happened? Hesitant to use it on anything else. Maybe try another turning of light wood? Just realized I have a photo. Here it is.

Tough to answer your issue correctly without knowing the wood species, but the driers in the BLO can chemically react with the tannins in certain wood species and turn a dark brown. Also, the heat generated by friction polishing may have exacerbated the problem by increasing the reaction. To avoid finish surprises, always test on scraps to see what you are dealing with.

This was an experiment with a spindle gouge grind. No clue to as wood species and not worried about the results. Will check with samples for major projects. Not hard to do as my shop is loaded with scraps.
