Mixed a bottle cap full of dye with a mason jar of hot water.

Sprayed a sheet of pine ply. This is my first experience with spraying and with dye.

Sprayed two boards. One with sanding sealer. The other was just Sprayed damp with water to raise grain. Not much difference but both seem to reject the stain in equal places. Kinda somewhat spotty.

Is it my application or the wood.

What dye did you use? The main reason the color was uneven is the lighter streaks are the hard part of the grain and the darker areas are the soft parts. To make it more uniform you should use a wood conditioner however it is likely to make all of it as light as the light streaks.

You could use your sprayer kinda like an air brush and shade over the lighter streaks in the wood. Just adjust the volume down to where it is barely spraying.

I think with the color you are doing an alcohol based aniline dye would do better for you.
