Hello there
I made a sign out of 1/2 plywood. It will be displayed outdoors so what can i use to stop the elements? If i use shellac as the first coat to seal the wood can i apply stain, oil paint, and than oil based urathane ?
Thanks

Are you wanting a painted sign or a stained sign?

If your wanting a painted sign I would just use a good oil based primer and oil based topcoat.

If your wanting a stained look then I would go with a good exterior stain such as TWP or Sikkens.

Thanks dave for your quick reply. After getting off my kiester and doing some research I realized that there are so many factors affect finishing that in a lot of cases its hit and miss. Finishing any piece of wood to exactly what you pictured is difficult to do. I have to say though, the Minwax site gives great information, especially for novices. When I get my piece finished I'll send a pic. Again
Thanks
Bill
