Can anyone ID this species?

I bought this as a 2x8x8 blank from woodcraft in a retail store. The tag was missing and no one there could say for certain just what species it was/is. They asked me what I wanted to pay for it and I said how's $10, the guy replied $15 and i said sure, it was my lucky day.

It turned very very well in my opinion almost like turning cherry. It has a spicy or slightly bitter taste that you can vaguely smell / taste when turning. The top picture is after a wax was applied, the bottom one is while turning the raw wood. Anyone venture a guess? I looked sort of like paduk with wax on the blank, or maybe some sort of rosewood?

It would be easier to try and determine an ID if you have taken pictures of the end grain before starting to turn.

Not so easy to ID at this point.

Try Phind's excellent site. You need to think of a species and then look it up to see the pictures. Lots of pictures of face, and end grain.

Woodcraft had been selling koa at my local store recently.

I have some pieces of what I think may be tineo, looks similar to yours. I have not seen this at my Woodcraft store.

I think it may be tineo. Added a pic from above and from the side. Thanks for the input
