I prefer to use a black aniline dye. Mohawk finishing products sells in online in power form which you can mix with alcohol obtained locally. It's also available premixed which is called Ultra Penetrating Stain but has hasmat fees ordering it. You could also use Transtint dye or even printers ink.

Steel wool soaked in vinegar. After 24-72 hours, remove steel wool and run your solution through a coffee filter to remove metal fragments. Biggest thing you need to do is wash the steel wool in acetone first to remove the oils, otherwise it won't rust. YouTube will show you how easy and effective it is.

What walleye said. I use that all the time on walnut as well as oak. Turns the coolest shade of purple/black. Stunning.
It's only on the surface, though. Do your sanding first and only go back with fine grit after to knock down the whiskers. It'll raise the grain a little.
