I just bought a new Dust Collector. This is a Delta 1 1/2 horse with a 1-micron filter. This is the single stage unit.

I see ads for a "Trash Can Cyclone Lid", to be used with a 30 gallon trash can. This is the unit that goes between the impeller and the work, to save larger particles from going through the impellor on the way to the collection Bag.

I need to know if this works, (saving wear and tear on the impellor, and giving a second storage container), or is this just more fluff to spend money on?

Does any body use one, or know anything about it.

All help is welcome

I use one and it works great. There are better systems, but when you are using a 1.5 HP unit like you have the 30 gallon trash can catches virtually all of the big stuff. I used one for 17 years and still have the 2HP 2 bagger and the plastic sperator top on the 30 gallon can dedicated to my router table. Well worth it!

Trash can lid seperator

I use one as well but only during long planing sessions. It is a lot easier to empty the can than to undo the dust collector bag.

Probably not worth it

Anything you put between the dust collector and the tool will cause friction that will reduce airflow. It probably won't reduce airflow very much, but unless you are generating a huge pile of chips, it's just not worth it.

Before I got a good cyclone dust collector, I had a 1.5hp single stage and tried a trash can lid cyclone. They are cheap and it worked Ok, but it takes up space in the shop, probably the hardest thing to come by when you work in a garage.

Best,

Scott
