Back in my 20's I built a tool storage box with six drawers. I used butt joins all the way around. Half inch plywood sides attached to half inch plywood bottoms. After 30 years .. the drawers are still in solid shape. Stored in unheated basement. Wanting to build some more drawers. What I understand now is to design a drawer properly a groove is placed in all drawer sides for the bottom to fit into. It would be easier to use butt joints like I did 30 years ago. So wondering why the groove design is better?

Unless you just want to try a different way, I think you’ve already proven your method works just fine. I’ve built a few drawers this way flush trimmed the bottom to the sides, front and back. Glue and trim head screws. Clamp plywood between two cauls while drilling and screwing to prevent splitting. I’ve also built them with the bottom inset/screws from the sides.
It would be faster than grooves.
