Dog Hole Router Template

3804 Views 53 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  John Smith_inFL
Hi All

We replaced the table in our trailer with Acacia butcher block from the giant orange store and I ended up with a 2 foot by 3 foot piece leftover.

My idea is to put some feet on it to raise it up a bit and then fill it with dog holes to use as a clamping board for putting together face frames etc. I can clamp it to the bench and then remove and store it when not needed. Maybe when I get the bigger shop I'll build a base for it so it's a proper bench at the proper height.

You tube videos seem to suggest the best way to make 3/4" holes is with a 1/2" spiral router bit and a collar in a template made on a CNC machine. Woodpecker and Rockler both sell the kit.

So... has anyone ever bought this kit used it once and put it on a shelf? Want to get some of your $$ back?

Call me cheap but I don't want to spend $100 on a dog hole kit.

On the other hand I don't to spend a half a day building a jig so I can build a clamp table, I want to spend the weekend building some face frames.

The best possible answer is that someone else already has this, has used it, doesn't need it again and wants to pass it along for some $$

Here's a clamping jig for you and a whole lot less work and cha-ching.. It's on my personal "honey do list" soon as I go get a sheet of melamine and some space to store it once I have it.. You can make it as large or small as you like..
I like it. Much easier to build than a torsion box or MFT. Much cheaper than a store bought MFT. Uses regular clamps vs toggles and other hold downs. Could probably combine some MFT dogs in a spacing configuration for standard size components to make quick assembly of drawers and doors. Doesn't require floor space. (y)

That’s a nice jig. The purpose of an MFT top is an array of dogs in perfect alignment, plus of course clamping.
There are basically two methods to make one's own:
Did you not read the thread?

Rockler makes the template you see in the pictures, it works quite well, is fairly accurate and inexpensive both to buy and to ship since it's lightweight plexi instead of heavy MDF.

Sorry to dump on you but you just resurrected an old thread and said the only way to do this doesn't include the solution posted.

Read the whole thread and try to avoid disrespecting the OPs solution in the future.

Bit of an over reaction, eh?

You know threads go off topic all the time he was responding to someone.

If you knew anything about Derek Cohen you would apologize.

I hope doesn’t leave.

I don't know Derek, but who joins a forum, picks a thread that has a posted solution from 9 weeks ago with pictures and a write up and then adds a post that says there are only two ways to do that and neither of them are the way that was posted as working? How is that helpful to this community?

DrRobert, you and I often don't see things the same way so I'm not surprised it's you that is asking me to apologize. All I'm asking is that people read the whole thread before replying that "there are only two ways to do that and neither of them is the way you did it."

It's insulting, condescending and rude. The method I posted works - why deliberately neglect it?

I found the post helpful and I appreciate him sharing.

He never said there were only two ways and he never condescended to anyone. Let's try to assume good intent until proven otherwise and let's not play the victim card. The lack of snowflakes is why I like this forum over others...

JayArr. Your post comes across to me as unnecessarily aggressive. It is also waaaay off in terms of what I wrote. Perhaps you may wish to start again ..

I have only recently begun posting here. Some threads may be old to you, but they are new for myself. I did look through the thread, and the last post was in January - not that far back, and so decided to add my recent experience.

I am in Australia, and would not purchase from Rockler owing to shipping costs and issues with exchange rates. Similarly, I would not expect someone in the US to purchase from Oz, although the costs would be favourable for you. The origins of the templates/tools I noted were from the UK, and I know they are available in the USA.

I mentioned two methods for making dog holes that were available to me in Australia, and that I had my own template made. The reason was cost - I have a full workshop including a Hammer K3 slider, and not sure if I will find a use for sawing on a MFT, so was not happy about spending Festool-prices to find out. Also, I build a lot of my tools. Further, having a template is better since this makes it possible to make other tops. As it turned out, that happened.

I did built the MFT table, and along with all the accessories, such as the hinge (actually I built two, and gave away the first). This information is on my website, where I post a wide range of information freely for all. You do not know me, but if you did you would realise that I have little to gain from my earlier post here.

The link to the MFT build is on this Index Page. Scroll down to Multi Function Table:

My website is: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/index.html

The forum gave me the forum name. I did not choose it. My name is Derek Cohen, and that is usually what I use when posting on forums. Read the first chapter in the build sequence for context: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Powered Tools and Machinery/BuildingMFT1.html

Here is a summary of what I now have ...

The first stage ...

With fold up extension ..

I built both the fence and hinge.

Pin side ....

Prior to modification, the hinge side ...

After modification ...

More on the fence ...

Hope all this helps.

Well this is what you posted in post #38:

There are basically two methods to make one's own: the UFK Parf guide (drill), and the Trend template (router).
If you had just chosen your words more carefully and said "I've seen two methods" or "the two methods I'm familiar with" or "the methods available here in Austrailia are"

Or more correctly, since you had read the thread, "there are three ways to do this, Rockler, Parf Guide or Trend template"

Then I probably wouldn't have felt like you were dismissing my method by intentionally not mentioning it.

How could you read an entire thread about method 'A' to build something and then make the decision to write "the way to do this is method 'B' and 'C' " ?

Like everything else you've done, over the top and perfectly executed. I keep your site bookmarked as a reference ;)

Mate, I was not replying to you, but relaying my experience. My post was not about you. You are being over-sensitive.

Further, you were over-selective: You quote me writing, "There are basically two methods to make one's own: the UFK Parf guide (drill), and the Trend template (router)", but you respond as if I wrote ".. .There are two methods to make ..", leaving out the "basically". If you understood what was on offer, you would have identified that the two methods are drilling and routing. The Rockler template you mention is for the router, as is the Trend, as is my CNC version I had made.

JayArr, I have no desire to get into a slinging match with you. I am happier to start over. Are you?

You posted a solution for your needs. Not "THE" solution to making an MFT. You also stated later in your own thread it wasn't perfect but "good enough for your skill level" - within 1/16" which is significant. I can assure you the poster you have issue with has a substantial skill level. Maybe you can learn something from him.
I just don't like condescension.

I don't want to start over. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

If you hover your mouse pointer over my avatar a box will pop up. Select the three dots in the top right and you will get an option to ignore me.

I'm going to 'ignore' you, have a nice life.

His was better.
