I have isolated a bad sound in my Delta 4" belt / 6" disk sander (31-460 type 2). It is in the near end roller (not the drive roller). There is no bearing but a shaft and bushings. I have no experience with this sort of thing so am asking for help. Can I simply replace the shaft? Or do I replace other parts?

You might pull the wheel off and look at it. Maybe it has needle bearings in it that you can wash the dirt out and re-grease them.

If you replace the shaft, you should also replace the bushings at the same time. What kind of noise is it making? If the shaft isn't badly scored or the busings severely worn, you might just need to give them a little clean and lube.

A friend/mechanic put some 1951 vintage US military issue black grease on the shaft and I reinstalled it. It quieted right down.
