Cypress Boards - finishing

689 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  John Smith_inFL
This is how I put a new smile on a couple of old B&D Workmates.
Florida Cypress, 1x5x32", two coats of shellac, 2 coats MW spray poly (satin).
I have no desire to refinish or restore the metal frames - there are just too many years of "character" in them to cover it up like they were never used. Whoever inherits them can go down that road.

It ain't rocket science - sand some boards, drill some holes, spray some finishes.

They'll look better once I get some paint smeared on them.
Good job John. I still have the one I bought back in the 60s sometime. Still in good condition with original tops and I use it fairly frequently. Probably one of Black and Decker's finest moments.

I'll be darned John.. I have an old rusted WM outside the shop I was just looking at this afternoon wondering what to do with and I happen to have a bunch of cypress sitting around mocking me saying, "You have too much of us sitting around taking up space!"

By gosh, you made them into decorative end tables - take them out of the garage!

my wife said: and that came from those ugly boards there in the corner ?? Why can't you make that for inside the house?
And, I replied, in my manly voice; "I didn't think you wanted some WorkMates inside the house". Yes, of course, it went downhill from there.
