Hello,

I've been looking for a conversion varnish finish that will retain the natural color of lighter woods, such as ash, maple, beech..
I've attached an image of a piece that has been partially finished in oil. I'm looking for a way to retain the natural tone of the wood shown on the left. (ash pictured) I realize it's most likely impossible, but if anyone has any idea of how to keep it from slightly yellowing from finish, I would love to hear how it's done.
Maybe a white wash of some sort?

Thanks in advance!
Philip

Thanks for the quick response, Rick. I forgot to mention that I'm also looking for the finish to be low sheen. Is that possible with water based? If so, know what brand?

When it comes to brands I would go with Sherwin Williams; there are different options; from natural clear coat, to classic mid tones, to dark stains. I tried the clear coat with Cherry and maple and both came out good and still not too artificial.
