There are several ways to make curved sections. For tall straight sections it can be done with a flute and bead router bit setup like this:

For shorter sections solid stock can be steam bent, or done in a series of bent laminations.

Or, it can be bandsawed out of solid stock.

Or, it can be "Coopered", by beveling the mating stave edges so when gluing up, it creates a curve.

Or, if you're really into the handwork, it can be carved out of solid stock and shaped with a drawknife , inshave, or spokeshaves.

If done in plywood, it can be kerf cut, and veneered after it's curved.
