I've seen bowles with this crushed glass or crushed stone glued in grooves or cracks in the wood.

What is that stuff and what kind of store cah you buy it?

I've checked a couple places and can't find any.

Internet has a LOT of sources for crushed minerals. Kinda depends how much you want to spend. I've purchased turquoise scraps from the Native Americans--good stuff, not cheap--I crush that myself. Look at RightRocks, from what I've seen, they're about as reasonable as they come.
Then comes the learning curve for doing inlays
Only thing with doing inlays for turning, keep in mind the hardness of the mineral==quartz for instance may look nice but will play hell with your chisels--may be as hard as the metal
