look for crud build up
There is a stop that limits the travel either on the threads or somewhere underneath. There is probably a hunk of sawdust that is preventing the full travel to 90 degrees. On older saws there is a set screw in the miter slots on either side that limits the travel to 45 and 90 degrees... your may have them? Dig out the manual or download a free copy online.
