I sand faceframes flat first with a belt sander. With a lot of practice you can pretty much sand one without any cross grains. In the 1970's I worked for a cabinet shop that the belt sander is the only sanding a faceframe got. Today I sand the cabinets in the same manor but I follow up with a random orbital sander through 180 grit on woods like oak and 220 grit on softer woods like alder.
