I know exactly what you're talking about, just didn't know the term for it.riven refers to pieces that are split apart from eachother with a froe (which is an edged tool in the shape of an L, where one leg is the blade with the sharpened side out, and one leg is the handle) and mallet(super old school). many chair makers use this technique because it produces pieces with more inherent strength because the pieces are split along the natural grain lines, also because pieces are easier to successfully steam-bend.
