In remodeling my basement i found the perfect place to house my electronics for the tv, game systems, and surround sound. I built this to fit the need/space. The frame is 1x poplar, "wrapped" in 1/4" birch plywood. I've still got to put trim around the edges, but it's practically done.

I bought some USB fans from NewEgg and plugged them in and set them behind some of the devices that run a lot.

That sounds like a good solution. FYI, when I built mine years ago, I found a thermostat you plug into the wall, and when it detects a set temperature, it passes the electricity through to another outlet. Using this, I could turn on the fans when the temp inside the equipment rack got above 90 degrees. Sorry I don't have a link, but it was nice having the fans come on automatically when needed.
