This is a perfect project for spring. I think picnic tables are a pretty good seller no matter where you are and also great to just have one in your own back yard. My biggest pet peeve regarding picnic tables is sitting down on a wobbly one. If I’m enjoying that fresh off the grill juicy hamburger I don’t want to be jarred around when someone sits down opposite of me. So to stop that I designed a slightly stronger table with more emphasis on lateral movement. There is a 4” support beam that runs the length of the seat that really strengthens the entire build. Both bench seats and the table top are secured from below with pocket hole screws. No screw heads visible from the top. Glued, screwed, and bolted. So long as you properly account for mother nature, these should last a long, long time. I recommend treated lumber but as you can see from this picture I used regular construction grade pine. I later sealed it with a tinted sealer. For a full writeup, instructions, shopping list, cutting diagrams, an assembly video, and the sketchup file check out the writeup on my website. You will also find a comfortable outdoor chair and bench design that will go great with this. I hope I can inspire someone else to build instead of buy! Thanks!
