Last May, I became an uncle once again after a 30 year "drought." (Father: 52, Mother: 48, first marriage and first baby for both!)

I am looking for good sources of supply for the following, so I can build "heirloom" toys for my nephew. Here is what I am looking for:

* Bright, shiny, non-toxic, ultra-durable, primary color paints. Do I need a clear coat, too?
* Metal rods for axles, etc. (Stainless steel?)
* Small non-pinching springs for insect antennae, flexible connections, etc.
* Whatever glue will hold the springs and axles to wood.
* Your recommendations for the best wood for "heirloom" toys. Maple? Birch? Something else?

The metal parts should be non-toxic, non-rusting, non-corroding, etc. Here are examples of the kind of toys I would like to make, but with my own designs, of course:

(Sadly, Kouvalias Toys is no longer in business, as far as I can tell.)

In addition, can you suggest the best wood for "heirloom" toys? Maple? Birch? Something else?

Bump! Isn't anyone making brightly colored baby toys?

I am still trying to find bright, shiny, primary color, baby-safe paints (and glossy finishes)?

... and those other parts - springs and stainless rods for axles, etc.

I have done my homework on the internet, but haven't found much luck. Most of the non-toxic paints I found are watery, pastel, and look faded.

I'd look at trustworthy US sources for paint. Golden Acrylics would be a good start.

I use Golden to paint figures and it has a durable finish. They also have a variety of clear coats with different characteristics.

Colorfastness and toxicity vary by pigment, but you can find all the information online for any colors you plan to use. There is usually a non-toxic equivalent for most colors.
