I'm looking to buy my first planer. I've always heard that the dewalt planer is the best to get but I don't have 600 bucks to spend. I've narrowed it down to either the porter cable planer at lowes or the rigid planer at Home Depot. So far I've been extremely happy with my porter cable tools so I am considering that planer based on my experience with their stuff and the 269.99 price tag. I also have heard pretty good thing about rigid but don't own any rigid tools and don't want to make the wrong choice. The rigid is 369. Any of you guys have experience with either of these planers and can tell me how well they work? Most of the stuff I'll be doing is small projects. I would like to have a planer that can handle a little more though in case I want to start making some furniture.

I have the DW734 and am really pleased with it....usually runs about $400.....it's the only planer I've ever used.....

I have the Rigid 4331 I like it. I dont know about the PC but the rigid has worked well for me and it has the repeat a cut feature so that you can consistently mill boards to the same thickness even on different occasions. Also i got mine for only like right at $300 using a harbor Freight 20% off coupon.

When I was researching planers about a year ago, I was between the DeWalt & Rigid units. The reason I had narrowed it to these 2 was based on reviews from magazines. I ended up getting a great deal on a new unit with free shipping from Rockler. However, with the lifetime guarantee for the Rigid, I would likely go that route if I did again. If I recall correctly, the consensus of the mag reviews was the DeWalt was the best, but the Rigid was close behind and some say better when you add in the cost and lifetime warranty factors.

I'm in Plano Texas which is a suburb of north Dallas. I have really wanted the dewalt 13in but everywhere I look it's 599.99. I actually haven't found anything on the PC. All of your guys advice was really good. So far you guys are pushing me toward rigid. It's a 13in and so much more affordable and the warranty is pretty attractive

DUDE.....you apparently live in the mecca of used planers....here are 5 dewalt dw735's used on craigslist. Most in your budget.....one not, but its got the stand and tables.....and two ridgids too....

Nope. The closest 2 Home Depot stores to me won't accept the HF coupons. Both store managers stated that HF is not classified a competitor as its a discount store. I've gone back and tried several times, but to no avail...

I have that last one ryan50hrl posted and have been extremely happy with it... although at times it does have a small amount of snipe. I only paid $125, but I do feel like it is worth more.

Keep in mind that the Ridgid claim is NOT a guarantee. It is a service agreement that will be honored only at Ridgid service centers. You must fill out all the paper work, and units must be returned to the service centers for repair or replacement.

Not yet. Bills came up so I didn't get to spend the money yet. I will probably go that route when I can spend the money though
