From what I've read its there not only to remove to change the blade, but to keep the table from separating. Keeping both sides flat.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

As Dominick said, the pin is important, it is intended to keep both sides of the table slot level. Cast steel can have internal stresses. Cutting the slot to allow the blade to be changed means if there were internal stresses, and if the two sides were not kept in line, over time the table could warp slightly.

It may feel to be a pain to remove when changing the blade, but it should be kept in place for normal use of the band saw.
