I would rather not try to use screws to attach exterior wood shutters to stucco walls. Does anyone have any idea what I can use. Perhaps, some kind of glue?

I hang mine with eye screws and L hook screws. Such as these.
Requires careful measuring and positioning, but they make it through hurricanes and allow replacement. I use stainless and have some installed since 1972.

No. They make it through wind storms.

Thanks, Bladerunner. I would use screws but locating the studs thru the stucco and what ever else is behind it is quite difficult. The shutters are for looks and nothing else. I'm in California, no hurricanes over here, at least not yet!

Agreed. If no studs then the toggle bolts are a very good option.

And, four small holes will be easier to repair (then some type of adhesive removal) if the next owner of the house wants to remove the shutters.
