    Thanks Chemmy. We're gonna go with black with a stained top. She wants to be able to use it for other things down the road. Either way - thanks for your input!

    Paint the odd woods a solid color and keep the ask top and drawers a natural wood tone [walnut, mahogany, etc,. Solid colors and natural wood stain colors can look very nice together. You can also make up a glaze say for a pink or white solid color base and glaze a light color over the base color and seal [if you can spray] that will give it a little more antique appearence. either way don't listen to the crowd, make some samples, show them to your wife, get a nod of approval and continue on, lol.
