    Thanks Midlandbob for your reply. Actually, I did take violin to a luthier and he thought the expense of his work would be more than the value of the instrument. It is an old instrument, German made, but not an expensive one. I thought I might just take it on as a project since it is not of great value. The luthier agreed that it looked as if someone put a heavy coat laquer and not even a good job of doing that. Thought I would just go at it very gently in attempt to lighten (weight wise) the wood.
