    Hello Keith,
I noticed a post of yours on a thread talking about housed stairs and also noticed that you used to be a stair builder. I was hoping you could help me with my project. I am replacing the carpeted stairs in my house with some hardwood steps. After I ripped the carpet up, I noticed that the old construction treads and risers were assembled with tapered mortises in the skirtboards. My plan is to rip all these old treads and risers out and wedge the new hardwood ones in. I also plan on milling a dado on the underside of the tread to fit the top of the riser and a tongue and groove joint on the other end of the tread and riser. With all these tight joints though, what about expansion gaps? I have done some research and seen a few carpenters do it this very way. I am extremely worried about the lack of space for expansion though. I was hoping you could guide me in the right direction.

    Darren
