If you are going to paint the poplar it is very good. on a personal note I can't think of why anyone would want to build something out of beautiful wood..... then cover it with paint, unless it is poplar. Staining poplar is difficult, it tends to be blotchy even on a good day. You may want to think about red oak or mahogany. I will say poplar is easy to work with since it is a soft hardwood.

I thought so. I lived in Kailua (Oahu) for about 7 years. I really miss it. I really miss the prices of Koa on the Islands, here on the mainland it is CRAZY expensive, for crappy figuring too! I dont' know your skill level in woodworking, but did I read that you were going to use poplar wood for the bed? If so, why that wood choice if you don't mind me asking?
