    hey Charlie.
when painting, I normally do not sand higher grit than 200 or 220. I discourage the 5" RO sander for the last finishing.
I have a half-sheet in-line sander that removes any swirls
when sanding with the grain. I do realize that this tool is not
always in someone's shop. but any in-line sander will work.
(check your local pawn shops for bargains).
in my experience, soft woods really telegraph the round defects
    caused by the RO sanders.
it takes a lot of practice to handle the RO to where you can get
    satisfactory results all the time.
two coats of primer and 2 or 3 coats of top coat paint usually
covers up any sanding scratches for a top notch finish.
if you use the roller, come back quickly with a brush to even out the texture and remove any bubbles.
    hope this helps !!
looking forward to seeing your project.

    John

I was a professional musician for thirty years, playing several instruments and traveling extensively. When I came in off the road and retired in 1989, I took a job with a custom mill-work company where my primary duty was reproducing antique crown moulding and things for high dollar renovations around Louisville, KY. I have experience on most woodworking equipment.

I had a run of bad luck health wise and have been disabled since 1997. I have a small shop that I have put together and I have made myself a promise to do whatever rings my bell for whatever time I have left (hopefully a couple of years anyway). I primarily deal with re-purposed lumber as social security wonít pay for kiln-dried. I try to make everything I need with whatever is on hand and I come up with some pretty strange concoctions.

I live in the woods on Lake Cumberland, KY in a thriving community called Jabez. If youíre in the nighborhood, stop by.
