The bed is a "commission" from my wife and daughter, based on a bed they saw in a pottery barn catalogue which is a painted bed. I'm also still very much a novice, but learning and acquiring equipment as I go along. So at this stage I'm exclusively working with cheap lumber (like poplar) until I feel more confident and ready to work more expensive wood. I would at this stage not even consider touching a piece of figured Koa, because I would only desecrate it. I have a piece of rough sawn tropical ash I'm getting ready to mill though. You're in Texas right? What's the "local" lumber over there?

Hello there! Thanks for the advice regarding the bed rail fasteners. I am indeed from Hawaii, and I live in Kamuela on the Big Island.
