Woodworking Talk - Woodworkers Forum - Duane Bledsoe's Album: My completed projects - Picture

My first paying piece! I built this fishing rod rack from pine 1x6 and 2x4, just basic construction lumber. Brad nailed and glued butt joint construction. Swivel casters for the feet. Holds 10 rods. Finishes were Minwax pretreatment and Early American stain, with three coats of Varathane hardwood floor sealer. I used it because this piece will see a lot of usage and needed to be durable. Varathane is also very easy to work with and forgivable to mistakes. It's even easy to repair minor mistakes done during application but not caught before it dries. For a good finish, simply rub with 4000 grit steel wool between each coat and after the final coat. I sold this piece for $100, about twice what it costed to build it. I've since been told by another woodworker that I sold it too cheaply.
