measuring drawer slides

How do you measure for drawer slides?

If I have a drawer that is 10" front-to-back, do I use 10" drawer slides? In other words, is the measurement of the slide showing the actual length of the slide or the size of the drawer it is for?

If you are using full extension slides it works well to use 10" slides for 10" drawer boxes. If you are not using full extension slides and the cavity inside the cabinet is 12" or more it may work better to use 12" slides on a 10" drawer. Generally with standard slides when you pull out the drawer about 3" of the drawer stays in the cabinet. On a 10" deep drawer this would be pretty cramped if only 7" of the drawer comes out.

If you use the standard steel ball bearing, full extension, side mount slides, they are FULL extension. They are measured by the length of the slide. (i.e. KV 8400 slides) You can also get them with 1" of over-travel. (KV 8405)
