Making a backgammon set

I'm wanting to make a backgammon set for a friend's birthday. I am still pretty new but have a decent shop set up (still no jointer or planer though, I'm looking) I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this. 1/4 wood cut into the triangular shapes? should I do vaneer glued to a backer? Inlay? I've never done veneer work or inlay but would be happy for the experience. I'm kind of lost. Anyone made one that can shed some light on this for me. If you've made one I'd love to see it.
