Loft bed
 
Hello, i do not know if this is the right place to ask.. but i will do it anyway :)

I really want to build a loft bed like the picture (see link) and i REALLY do not know how, is there anyone who can help out with some plans, tips or some experience. I would really like it to look like the picture ;) Please help a girl in need :grin:

That looks like a pretty long distance to go without center support, especially for something that will hold a lot of weight. I'd be willing to bet it's a torsion box.

could a such torsion box hold two persons? i was hoping to make the loft bed 3.8 m long and 1.4 m wide and then only support it with "logs" standing close to the wall.

You would pretty much have to have a 10' ceiling to make that work. I don't see any reason that couldn't be framed like a second story porch. If there was too much of a span you would have to put some center support like a post or bracket. A steel frame would take up less vertical space.

I do have a pretty high ceiling so that is no problem :) and i can see how it could look a bit like a second story porch. But i do not know how to work with steel though, but are you thinking the whole bed or just, i don't know... the poles?

All I'm thinking of is the framework to hold the deck up. If you want to build that with wood and the span isn't more than 3.65 meters you could get by with using 2x8 yellow pine framing. Any more than that and you probably should go with 2x12's

There is a heavy duty guard rail in the picture that almost touches the ceiling.
If you tied your guard rail uprights to the ceiling joist, it would strengthen your platform.
The center would not sag because it would tied to the ceiling joist.

Hi,
The normal way would be to build a square frame 3.8 meter by 1.4 meter out of wood framing, then add 4 more 3.8 meter pieces spaced equally between the 2 long sides. Then add a plywood top. Because it is only about 150mm thick and built of wood it will sag and be bouncy. It will feel weak, but it will not break.

Next, get a 1.4 meter long piece of steel that is 150mm wide and about 10mm thick. Drill holes in it and screw it into the 1.4 meter piece that is closest to the outer frame, the one that is about 1.2 meters from the wall. Then, climb up and see how bouncy it is, and how much it sags. if it feels strong enough, fine. If not, add another piece of steel.

I am leaving out some details, but this is the general idea. You are using the very stiff and strong steel to overcome the wood, which will tend to bend.
In the US, we say that the steel piece has become the 'sister' to the wood piece it is screwed to, that you have 'sistered' the steel to the wood.
