Dining room chairs - plans needed

Hey all,

I've done a fair bit of searching and looking for general layouts/plans for building various hardwood dining room chairs, and it seems there isn't much out there for free or to buy. I'd like to build some chairs that rely on shape for comfort rather than using any cushions or webbing, but beyond that I have no particular style that I am aiming for. Has anyone else had better success finding patterns, or photographed their build processes?

I'm intending to start trying my hand at a few builds this winter, mostly just copying things I like the look of and guessing/testing my way to some dimensions that will work.

Any direction or resources would be very appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

Well MattS, how ornate or plain are you wanting to build your chairs? That's important. What table, if any are you wanting them to go with?

Good questions Tim - I'm afraid I don't have a lot of specifics to work from. Just running through some Google Images a few that catch my eye are:

Nice and simple, but the flat seat looks uncomfortable:

These are also nice looking in my book:

In terms of table I would be pairing them with, I will likely build one later on (the table we currently have is permanently covered with a table cloth, due to being ugly as sin). So that is nicely open-ended.

I don't own a lathe (and don't have any interest in one presently), so turning the legs or backs would be a challenge to manage. I also don't own a bandsaw, so that's a limitation (though I may buy one at some point soon).

Does that help a bit, or leave just as many questions as it answers?

Do you have a steam box to bend wood? Hope that doesn't sound like a dumb question but I already have somewhat of an idea. It wouldn't be complex though.

Send him a PM or a visitor message to see if there are plans.

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

I don't have a steam box (yet), but if it's going to be a key part of this stuff I'll find a way forward.

No biggey. We may be able to do it with a bandsaw or get some advice from the others here.

Chair Preliminary Drawing

Here's a start. I took a little here and a little there from what you gave me. All we need do now is fine tune or trash it and start again.

Digging up the past but wondering if you ever found plans and/or built chairs? I'm looking to get a band saw and table saw and make dining table and chairs and then an outdoor table as well one day.
